Local Bulgarian Laws and Customs

Local Bulgarian  laws and customs

In Bulgaria the  authorities treat all drug-related, including possession and also sex offences very seriously.

The age of consent is 16

Custodial sentences should be expected for any foreigners that are convicted of such offences.

Offences that relate to drunken, disorderly behaviour or hooliganism can also be treated more seriously than in the UK.

Homosexuality is no longer illegal, though Bulgarians tend not to be very open about the subject so the gay community generally keep a low profile.  You will find a few gay bars and clubs in Sofia, to a lesser extent in other major towns of Bulgaria.

You should be careful if you are taking photographs in security-sensitive areas such as airports.  Remember if in doubt, ask permission.

Whilst you can expect the majority of property brokers to be honest, there have been numerous reports of  buyers being defrauded.  Should this occurs, there will be  little that the British Government can do in assisting you  in the recovery of any capital outlay. It is advised that you solicit comprehensive advice, including legal advice from a qualified, independent, Bulgarian property lawyer, before you make any purchase.

This information is for guidance only as requirements may change from time to time and we would advise you to check with the authorities prior to travelling to Bulgaria
