Location and climate of Burgas (Bourgas)

Burgas (Bourgas) has an average altitude of 17m. Travel just north or south of the city and you will find saline water lakes and bird sanctuaries.  Burgas is a route of birds migrating southwards.

21st century Burgas is a municipal and regional centre, the fourth biggest settlement of Bulgaria, Burgas (Bourgas) has a population of 226,000 inhabitants. Burgas (Bourgas) has more than 15,000 companies registered on its territory and also has the lowest rate of unemployment.

For many years Burgas (Bourgas) has been known as the tourist centre of the south Black Sea coast. As a tourist destination it is also a starting point for tourism to other Black Sea resorts, such as Sunny Beach, Elenite, Dyuni, Nesebar and Sozopol. Ancient towns of historical significance have preserved traces from old Greek settlements in particular Nesebar, with many old churches that date back to the beginning of the first millennium.

However, it is not only the sea that attracts visitors from the country and abroad. All these resorts including Burgas (Bourgas) offer the widest range of facilities and provide all kinds of amusement and entertainment, restaurants and pubs, variety of cuisines, discos, cafes, water slides, pools, aqua parks and much more, both locals and tourists come to enjoy and soak up the atmosphere of this area of Bulgaria. Visit the Burgas Sea Garden, lush greenery stretching for several kilometers along the Black Sea shore, join the local people who come to enjoy a stroll and to relax at weekends or after a hard day’s work.

Even today, where the Black Sea washes the foot of the Strandzha Mountain, you can find traces of old heathen traditions present in folk rites and rituals these have been preserved even today, and are still practiced as a tourist attraction or a cherished tradition.

Festivals and the Arts

Burgas “the city of festivals” every summer, on the stage of the summer theatre in the Sea Garden there is a festival called “Burgas and the Sea” for many years this festival has been renowned as the festival popularizing many songs which has been the threshold for the career of many talented performers and for many years been the stage for International Folklore festival presenting folk dances and songs of people from all over the world.  The beer fest, the Festival of the Bulgarian rock music, and the annual theatre festival “On the Shore”, also the traditional classical music festival, are all organized and held in Burgas.

Here in Burgas there are more than ten art galleries.  The City Art Gallery, here exhibits being are arranged in the former Jewish Synagogue.  It has been proclaimed as a work of art and nowadays holds works of most major Bulgarian painters and sculptors.  Numerous other galleries some of which are state-owned and some private exhibiting work of young, contemporary authors, and also sell their paintings. There is a cinema and a theatre which stage performances of the local theatre company and of visiting companies.

Summer in Burgas (Bourgas) 

In this area summertime is warm, but never gets too hot which is due to a constantly blowing breeze. During the summer you should expect average temperatures of 26 degrees celsius or 78 fahrenheit.

Winter in Burgas (Bourgas)

Winter here is mild and temperatures rarely drop below zero, not a place for ski holidays as there is almost no snow.

Burgas (Bourgas) History

Settlers have been attracted to Burgas (Bourgas ) for tens of centuries. With the earliest human settlements dating  back to  the Bronze and Iron Age. Burgas (Bourgas) is an  area rich in archeological artifacts that are connected to Thracian civilization.

Burgas or Bourgos

The name “Burgas” is associated with the Latin word “bourgos”, which means “tower”.

Legends

There is a legend that there was a Roman passenger station in the area of present  day Burgas Port.  During  18th century AD had the biggest harbour in the area south of the Balkans, which declined during the last years of the ottoman rule, then in the 20th century became one of the most rapidly developing settlements in the country.
